Thousands of tourists visit Peten, Guatemala, each year primarily to experience the magnificent ruins of Tikal in a unique tropical rainforest setting. An increasing number of visitors, however, are traveling to the region to see the abundant and diverse birdlife that exists there. An Annotated Checklist of the Birds of Tikal National Park and Peten, Guatemala is designed especially for these bird enthusiasts. This detailed account of the bird species found in the region provides information on when, where, and in what numbers each species should be expected.

In addition to the seasonal graph-like checklist that presents the relative abundance and occurrence of 403 species of birds, this book includes an introduction (with maps) and a description of the birding habitats with accompanying black-and-white photographs. A species account on 114 Peten species not previously treated in books on the region is also provided. Each account presents the current status and the specific habitats and/or localities from which these species have been reported. Appendices at the end of the book provide lists of all species by status, and whether species occurrences are supported by specimen records or sight records.

This book is an indispensable bird-finding guide to the region, an excellent companion to carry with an identification field guide.
